John ChrysostomMatthew 5,1–3(Hom. xv.) By not choosing His seat in the city, and the market place, but on a mountain in a desert, He has taught us to do nothing with ostentation, and to depart from crowds, above all when we are to be employed in philosophy, or in speaking of serious things.Read

The Catena Aurea – the "Golden Chain" – is a continuous commentary on the four Gospels compiled by Saint Thomas Aquinas around 1263 at the request of Pope Urban IV. He strung the commentaries of the Greek and Latin Church Fathers onto the Gospel text like links of a golden chain.
For every verse the work gathers the voices of the Fathers: John Chrysostom, Augustine, Jerome, Ambrose, Gregory the Great, Bede the Venerable, Theophylact of Ohrid, Origen, Hilary, Cyril of Alexandria, and many more. A conversation of tradition about the Word of God unfolds.
On Sacraresponda you can study the complete Catena Aurea in German and English – verse by verse, linked with the Bible text and the work of Saint Thomas, the Summa Theologiae.
