Remigius of Auxerre
Catena Aurea · Matthäusevangelium 6
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
The reward of the hypocrites’ fast is shewn, when it is added, That they may seem to men to fast; verily I say unto you, They have their reward; that is, that reward for which they looked.
