Italy, Alatri 1228

A young woman, following the instructions of a sorceress, stole a consecrated host to create a love spell. Three days later, she found that the host had turned into bleeding flesh. Pope Gregory IX confirmed the miracle in a papal bull and interpreted it as a sign from God against heresies concerning the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The relic is still venerated today in the Cathedral of St. Paul the Apostle (S. Paolo Apostolo) in Alatri.
