On May 8, 1902, the volcano Montagne Pelée erupted and destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre. The nearby village of Morne-Rouge was miraculously spared while the Blessed Sacrament was exposed for adoration in the church. Witnesses reported seeing the thorn-crowned Heart of Jesus in the Host, which even appeared to be bleeding. A few months later, another eruption destroyed the village.
