After a devastating fire in Wilsnack, three intact hosts were found in the ruins of the parish church, which bled continuously. The event attracted countless pilgrims and led to the construction of the large pilgrimage church of St. Nikolai. Pope Eugene IV confirmed the cult, and Wilsnack became one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Northern Europe.
