Is this "faith in the Church instead of the Bible"?

No. It is faith in Christ that gave his Church the authority to bear witness to and interpret Scripture. The Church serves Scripture—it does not create it.

  1. Christological Center: We believe the Bible for Christ’s sake—and we believe the Church for Christ’s sake, because he founded it.

  2. Ministry: Dei Verbum 10: Scripture, Tradition, and the Magisterium are so closely connected that none exists without the others; the Magisterium is not above the Word, but serves it, teaching only what has been handed down.

  3. Patristic Voice: Augustine’s statement about the authority of the Catholic Church points exactly to this: Christ works through his Church so that the faithful may recognize and rightly understand true Scripture.

Scripture (EÜ): 1 Tim 3:15; John 16:13.

Fathers/Teachers: Augustine; Athanasius; Thomas Aquinas.

Magisterium: Dei Verbum 10–11.
