San-Francesco-dAssisi-Sacraresponda

Francesco d’Assisi, also known as Francis of Assisi, was a saint and founder of a religious order, born around 1181 in Assisi, Italy, and died on October 3, 1226.

Origin and Youth

  • Francis was born as Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant.

  • He received a good education but was initially rather worldly and dreamed of a knightly life.

Conversion and Change of Life

  • Around 1204/1205, he experienced a religious turning point after a vision and began to radically change his life.

  • He gave up his possessions, lived in voluntary poverty, repaired dilapidated churches, and preached the Gospel primarily through simple and practical imitation of Jesus.

Founding of the Franciscan Order

  • Francis founded the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans) and had it officially recognized by the Pope in 1215.

  • The rule of the order emphasized poverty, humility, charity, and a close connection to nature and animals.

Work and Significance

  • Francis was known for his love of creation; he is considered one of the first animal and environmental protectors in history.

  • He initiated the depiction of the nativity scene and advocated for the poor and sick.

  • His way of life and message inspired many and led to the rapid spread of his order throughout Europe.

Death and Veneration

  • Francis died at the age of about 44 in 1226 near the Portiuncula Chapel in Assisi.

  • Two years later, he was canonized; his memorial day is October 4, which is also World Animal Day.

  • He is considered the patron saint of social workers, environmentalists, and all who live in poverty.

In summary, Francis of Assisi was a deeply devout man who, through his poverty, love of creation, and social care, left a lasting mark on the Church and society.

Words of the Saint

A person is only as much before God as he truly is. And nothing more.

The way to God can never pass by people.

Only in the poor can we give something to God.

One must become a fool to find Christ.

To read Holy Scripture is to seek counsel from Christ.
